Course Description

Evaluation and assessment of film and television media created by and featuring people of African descent, from the silent film era to today, focusing on media as a tool for protest, resistance, and cultural affirmation. Using Black Studies frameworks, students will examine racialized media representation and its intersection with class, gender, and sexuality, while analyzing concepts such as race, racism, racialization, and decolonization. Through critical engagement with African American media, students will explore the historical and cultural contributions of Black communities and their ongoing struggles for justice and liberation.
