Course Description

An exploration of music from around the world and how it relates to culture, society, and other contexts such as setting, identity, migration, global economics, cross-cultural appropriation, dance, ritual, and politics. Course includes an introduction to ethnomusicology and ethnographic methods through a range of case studies from different musical traditions. Sonic analysis of music from different global music cultures encourages students to think and analyze music cross culturally. Concert attendance may be required.
