Program Overview

This program prepares students for licensing as a Barber. The Barbering program requires 1000 hours of comprehensive training in all facets of the Barbering Industry. Courses focus on theoretical fundamentals, practical manipulative skills, business knowledge, career development in the field, and the professional and ethical training needed for licensing through the California State Board of Barbering and Cosmetology. Prepared with excellent entry-level and some advanced skills, students are able to work in many facets of the Barbering industry. Skyline College's Barbering program is approved by: California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

Admissions Procedures and Requirements:

Admissions to the Barbering program is through special application only. Students are admitted into the program twice a year " Fall and Spring semester. Approximately 30 students are admitted to the program each semester. Selection is based on a lottery protocol approved by the Skyline College Administration and the Cosmetology, Barbering, and Esthetics faculty. Full-time registration is required, and all courses must be taken in sequence. A minimum grade of C is required in all coursework.

Applicants who have previously applied, and wish to reapply, must resubmit a new application.

Admission to the Barbering Program requires eligibility for a college level English Composition course (equivalent to ENGL C1000 or ENGL C1000E).

The California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology requires applicants to provide a valid Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) to apply for examinations and licensure. In addition, applicants must also provide a government issued photo ID. For additional information, students should consult the California Board of Barbering and Cosmetology.

BARB 702 Barbering: Shaving & Hair Design 6 units
BARB 703 Barbering: Chemical Concepts 6 units
BARB 704 Barbering: Advanced Concepts 3 units
BARB 705 Business and Barbershop Experience 9 units
BARB 725 State Board Written Examination Preparation 3 units
In addition to the core courses, Barbering students are eligible to earn extra units/hours by enrolling in COSM 799, COSM 670 or BUS. 150.
Students can earn hours by taking any of the following: Units
COSM 747 Advanced Hair Removal 2 units
BARB 750 Client Services Workshop 1 unit
COSM 767 Eyelash Enhancements 1.5 units
COSM 799 Braiding, Natural Hair Care, and Hair Weaving (Non-Licensure) 3 units
Total Required Major Units: 31

And required General Education coursework and electives as needed to meet the minimum 60 units required for the Associate degree.
