Explores the responsibilities and duties of police officers at the state, county and local level to include patrol techniques, traffic enforcement, crime prevention, report writing, community relations, as well as the public’s expectation that they perform their duties in an ethical and unbiased manner. Introduces students to the application of constitutional and criminal law to real and hypothetical situations, the legal limits of a police officer’s authority, and the importance of maintaining knowledge of the law. Examines the internal and external stressors facing police officers and the impact those stressors can have on job performance. Explores ethical issues often faced by police officers and the reasons why ethical lapses occur.
