Program Overview

The Certificate of Achievement in University Transfer - Cal-GETC (California General Education Transfer Curriculum) will be awarded upon completion of the Cal-GETC requirements as outlined in the catalog year's Cal-GETC certification sheet. Students must complete 34 units, which are distributed among six subject areas. Cal-GETC requirements are designed to be taken with a major area of study in preparation for transfer to a California State University (CSU) or University of California (UC) system. Some private and out-of-state colleges may accept Cal-GETC. This certificate recognizes the completion of lower-division general education requirements for Cal-GETC.

Program Requirements

Complete 34 units of coursework to meet the Cal-GETC certificate requirements as listed below. All courses must be completed with a grade of “C” or higher.
AREA 1: ENGLISH COMMUNICATION (9 units) Three courses required – one course each from 1A English Composition, 1B Critical Thinking and Composition, and 1C Oral Communication. Units
Area 1A: ENGLISH COMPOSITION 3 units
Area 1B: CRITICAL THINKING AND COMPOSITION 3 units
Area 1C: ORAL COMMUNICATION 3 units
AREA 2: MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS and QUANTITATIVE REASONING (3 units) One course required. Units
Area 2: MATHEMATICAL CONCEPTS and QUANTITATIVE REASONING 3 units
AREA 3: ARTS AND HUMANITIES (6 units) Two courses required – one course each from 3A Arts and 3B Humanities. Units
Area 3A: ARTS 3 units
Area 3B: HUMANITIES 3 units
AREA 4: SOCIAL and BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES (6 units) Two courses required - Choose from at least two academic disciplines. Units
Area 4: SOCIAL and BEHAVIORAL SCIENCES 6 units
AREA 5: PHYSICAL and BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (7 units) Two courses required: one course each from 5A Physical Science and 5B Biological Science. At least one must include a lab as part of the course or as a separate course (5C). Units

Area 5B: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE 3 units
Area 5C: LABORATORY ACTIVITY 1 unit
AREA 6: ETHNIC STUDIES (3 units) One course required. Units

ADVISORY
CSU Graduation Requirement in American History & Institutions (AHI) Students intending to apply to transfer to a CSU campus may choose to take classes at Skyline College to meet the CSU AHI Graduation requirement. Complete courses to cover US-1 (US History), US-2 (US Constitution), and US-3 (State and Local Government). Check the Skyline College catalog Cal-GETC requirements for courses that meet this requirement. Completion of AHI is not required to earn the Cal-GETC certificate. Units
Note: Courses used to satisfy this requirement may also be applied to Cal-GETC requirements in Areas 3B and 4. Please consult with a Skyline College counselor for additional information. Course approvals for this requirement may vary between SMCCCD Colleges. If you are planning to register for a course to complete AHI outside of Skyline College, please review the Cal-GETC requirements of the college.
