Program Overview

This program represents the first phase of training in the Emergency Medical Technician career structure. The course covers all techniques of emergency equipment and supplies considered within the responsibilities of the EMT-I. In addition to didactic and skills training on campus, the course includes observation in a local hospital emergency room and a ride-along rotation with a local ambulance company.

To be eligible to receive the Certificate of Specialization, students must maintain an 80% in the course and successfully complete the clinical component and required skills testing. Please note that this is a graduation certificate and cannot be used for medical practice without additional state/national certificates.

STATE/NATIONAL CERTIFICATION ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS:

  • Successful completion of a state-approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course that meets or exceeds the National Emergency Medical Services Education Standards for Emergency Medical Technician.
    • Successful completion of the Skyline College EMT course includes Psychomotor Skills testing completed during the course final exam.
  • Current CPR credential for healthcare providers.
  • Demonstrated competence in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) skills.
  • Successful completion of additional testing through the NREMT at a nationally approved facility for the cognitive exam.

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Admissions to the Emergency Medical Technology Certificate of Specialization program is through special application only. Students are admitted to the program twice a year " Fall and Spring semesters. The EMT Program Special Application Form is available on the Skyline College Emergency Medical Technology website (https://skylinecollege.edu/emt/). Please see special application for submission dates. NOTE: Applicants who have previously applied to the program, and wish to reapply, must submit new application materials.

Selection of students is based on criteria approved by the Skyline College Administration and consistent with State regulations. For further information on the Emergency Medical Technology (EMT) Program, please call (650) 738-4310 or (650) 738-4314.

To be considered for admission students must meet the following requirements and provide the necessary documentation:

  1. Be 18 years of age or older by the first day of class
  2. Have a current and valid American Heart Association (AHA) BLS Healthcare Provider certificate or have successfully completed EMC. 425 at Skyline College within the past two years (must remain valid through the completion of the Skyline College EMT course).

Students accepted into the program must complete and provide documentation (within 1 month of the start date) of the following requirements:

  1. A satisfactory physical examination
  2. A clean drug screening test
  3. A social security referenced background check
  4. Immunization records verifying freedom of communicable disease

NOTE: If the student fails to provide documentation of these requirements they will be removed from the program.
