Course Description

A critical look at film history and culture from silent and classical Hollywood to Japanese and European films. Students learn to critique classical, modern and avant-garde films and to analyze the structure of cinematic language, i.e. motifs, metaphors, narrative cause-effect devices and oppositions. Students develop a visual and ideological understanding of film.
