Program Overview

The Special Education Assistant Career Certificate provides the general knowledge base and skill set needed by paraprofessionals who work with students with disabilities (Prek-K12) in either self-contained or inclusive learning environments. The 9-unit certificate requires 4 courses, each of which targets key concepts and competencies integral to the Special Education profession, including but not limited to 1) characteristics of children with varying disabilities and legislated categorical definitions and criteria; 2) Universal Design for Learning (UDL) classroom support strategies, functional behavior management, and curriculum modifications, 3) professional ethics and collaboration with diverse families with children with special needs, and 4) a capstone project that integrates UDL with authentic classroom experiences.
